The USACE construction engineer is the lead construction engineer and is responsible for designing, overseeing, and coordinating construction of major civil, drainage, and building projects. USACE construction engineers are also responsible for evaluating construction costs and analyzing financial aspects of projects and plans. General information This program is designed to provide students with a broad education that incorporates knowledge and skills in the structural, civil, and environmental sciences. USACE’s on-the-job training component consists of approximately 500 one-week “shoulder periods,” or internship experiences at field facilities throughout the United States. Field training in civil engineering includes projects with the Bureau of Reclamation, Corps of Engineers, and the USACE Office of Civil Engineer. Civil engineering projects include: building water and sewer systems, building power plants, constructing water/sewer lines, building roads, and building water and power lines. Eligibility requirements This program is open to both women and men. Education, training, and/or experience USACE has a two-year, entry-level minimum requirement for the USACE construction engineer program. The USACE construction engineer program consists of two components: (1) two years of coursework and (2) at least three years of on-the-job training. The first year of this program is a combination of four courses. Students must take two foundation courses: Mathematical and Analytical Foundations and Engineering Methods for Structural Analysis. Students must also complete one of the following courses: Mechanical and Materials Science or Civil Engineering Methods for Design and Construct.
